Open thread, 7.29, Braves vs. Ellis Valentines

I was a guest star on 'Fantasy Island'

I’ve become convinced that Derek Lowe is what he is — a modern-day Rick Mahler. Lowe’s average season, according to Baseball Reference: 11-9, 3.87 ERA, 171 IP, 172 HA, 50 BB and 111 K’s.

Mahler’s? 10-11, 3.99 ERA, 200 IP, 212 HA, 62 BB and 98 K’s.

Lowe’s slightly better, but $60 mil should get you more than a rich man’s Mahler.

The Braves’ highest-paid player needs to pitch much better than he has, especially if the Phils land Oswalt. Might as well start today.

Love the shot of Valentine rolling with his half-NFL face grill. Looks kind of Mad Max.

  2. Hudson is this team’s ace. i thought Jj was a close 2 but it isnt looking that way. Lowe’s record is day games is excellent so maybe his sinker will wear out some Nats hitters. Gonazales is out with a fever and J-Hey might have reinjured his thumb.

we need a quick 4-1 2 hr game and get the heck out of DC.

  3. Melky gets turned the wrong way more than any CF I can imagine.

And loved this stat on Adam Dunn: 23 HR, 16 solo. He’s a left-handed hitting Ozzie Virgil.

So far, so bad for D Lowe today. What the hell happened to J-Hey? Reinjured his thumb?

    Matty D. slays southpaws!

I’d like to kick D-Lowe in the vajayjay right about now.

I think Rick Mahler could have gotten Will Nieves out in that situation!

Suddenly, this season is not as much fun as it was a week or so ago.

  9. Anything more depressing than tying a game up and then letting the other team score in the bottom of the inning?

I hope we’re not looking at our second rain-shortened 1-run loss of the season.

I love J-Hey, but he is continuing to be injury prone. The Lowe contract might be the worst one the Braves have ever given out, including Hrabosky and Sutter.

  12. Jay-Hey is NOT INJURED.

  13. He just drew a walk.

The lights are growing dim. Losing back-to-back series to the Fish and Nats blows.

    Ugh.

Wow. That was probably our worst series since the losing streak. Start off by getting shut out by an aging bum from the Nats’ pen, then we couldn’t muster any offense against their bullpen today. Just dreadful.

To top it off, I just found out Ernie “the Cat” Ladd is dead. He died three years ago, but I didn’t know it. RIP, Cat. I’ll bet even “Dirty Rhodes” misses you.

charlesad, He probably had a vision of this series, and it did him in.

  19. Damn Braves are playing like it the last week of last year.

We’ve gone cold. We can turn it around, but Glaus needs to start hitting again. We should probably trade for another hitter. But sucking against the fish and the nats is just dispiriting.
