Remember when the Braves bench featured the likes of Deion Sanders, Francisco Cabrera, Mike Devereaux, Luis Polonia, Wally Joyner, Dwight Smith, Matt Franco, Mark DeRosa and Matt Diaz?
Remember the Bomb Squad?
The 2017 Braves bench ain’t them. Matt Kemp is nursing a sore hammy and will be replaced by Jace Peterson, the only credible reserve on the team thanks to his versatility — not his career .333 slugging percentage. Peterson will bat 7th, with Adonis and his lifetime .694 OPS vs. right-handers moving to clean-up.
Fantasy leaguers might want to pick up Pirates starter Chad Kuhl.
Kuhl’s mound opponent, R.A. Dickey, is probably the most interesting thing going tonight. It’s been 30 years since a knuckleballer took the hill for the Braves. Let’s hope it goes better for Dickey than it did for Phil Niekro on Sept. 27, 1987. Knucksie, signed just he could pitch his final game in a Braves uniform, walked six, allowed six hits and five runs in three innings vs. the Giants, who won 15-6. Still, it was probably the highlight of that season.
