He has a higher OPS in the AL than Brian McCann, is nine months younger, will make about at least $10 million less next year and won’t be a free agent until 2020. McCann is the better backstop when it comes to calling a game and framing pitches but Vogt has the better arm, throwing out base stealers at a rate of better than 40 percent. Like McCann, Vogt is on the trading block. And he also bats left-handed.
Because of his age, and the fact he was such a late bloomer, he’s not likely to cost that much in talent. A combination of, say, Max Povse and Dustin Peterson would probably get it done. If I’m right, the Braves would be foolish not to act, assuming Wilson Ramos can’t be had for a bargain.
