The silver anniversary of #Braves nirvana: Scratching and surviving

With nine games left in the ’91 season the Braves were in trouble. Losers of 4 of the last 5, including an 8-0 drubbing by the Reds the night before, Atlanta trailed the Dodgers by two games heading into Houston.

After 7 innings, it looked as if the season might be over. Ryan Bowen, who finished his career with a 5.30 ERA, had shut out the Braves, allowing just three singles. Lonnie led off the 8th with a double, the only extra base hit the Braves would record in the game. Five singles and four runs would follow and Big Al would secure the save with two scoreless frames. The Braves wouldn’t lose again until the season’s final game.
