He started by striking out the side. Two more strikeouts followed in the 2nd, including Barry Bonds.

As good as he was in Game 2, Steve Avery was even better in Game 6, with the Braves facing elimination. He allowed only 3 hits, all singles, and walked two in eight shutout innings. Not one Pirate reached scoring position.

The Braves didn’t fare any better against Doug Drabek, who held them scoreless into the 9th. With two outs, Greg Olson delivered an RBI double.

Al Pena relieved Avery in the bottom of the 9th and promptly allowed a single to Gary Varsho, who was then moved up to second on a bunt. He advanced to third on a wild pitch, bringing up Andy Van Slyke for en epic at bat. On the eighth pitch, Pena threw his first change-up of the series, freezing Van Slyke and securing a 1-0 victory, the third game of the series to end 1-0.
