A meaningful September

The playoffs are all but decided. In the NL, with home field advantage in the play-in game all that’s left to be decided. It’s more interesting in the American League, with the two division winners yet to be determined, with the runner-up in the AL West needing only to hold off the Twins to reach the Wild Card game.

But what if there were only three playoff spots and two divisions in each league? The team with the best record in the AL and NL would receive a bye while the other division winner squared off against a wild card in a best 2-out-of-3.

September would be a helluva lot more interesting.

NL EAST

Pittsburgh 82-55

New York 77-61 5.5 GB

NL WEST

St Louis 87-51

Chicago 80-57 6.5 GB

Los Angeles 80-58 7 GB

NL WILD CARD

Chicago 80-57

Los Angeles 80-58 .5 GB

New York 77-71 3.5 GB

Not much of a division race, though you’d have three good teams competing for one playoff spot.

AL EAST

Toronto 79-59

Yankees 77-60 1.5 GB

AL WEST

Kansas City 83-55

Houston 75-64 8.5 GB

Texas 73-64 9.5 GB

AL WILD CARD

Yankees 77-60

Houston 75-64 3 GB

Texas 73-64 4 GB

So you’d still have Intriguing races division for the AL East, Wild Card and for best record (playoff bye).

If you’re going to play 162 games, make them count.
