Open thread, 9/7, #Braves race for the bottom

The Braves and Phillies are a combined 60 games under .500. The last time that happened: Oct 6, 1985, when the 65-96 Braves played the 62-99 Giants at Candlestick. Bobby Wine was the manager. Andres Thomas hit lead-off. The Braves led 6-0 after five, fell behind 7-6 then scored the winning run on a Claudell Washington single.

You couldn’t ask for a more fitting match-up as the competition for the top draft pick heats up. Aaron Harang is 1-11 w/ 6.58 ERA in past 16 starts, the only win coming against the Braves. His mound counterpart, Williams Perez, is 0-6 with a 9.50 ERA in his last seven starts and IS NOT A PROSPECT.

Then again, maybe he qualifies as one on this sorry bunch. Too early for the line-ups, but who gives a fuck?

  1. Over the weekend, the Braves clinched a losing season. Wonder when the last time that occurred before Labor Day? It’ll still be a couple more days before they’re mathematically eliminated from the pennant race.

  2. Williams Perez IS a prospect after all. Braves win! Braves win! Seriously, it was good to see the players having fun and good to see Olivera hit a little.
