A player just up from Gwinnett starts tonight for Los Bravos.
But it’s not Hector Olivera. They want to give him a few more swings to get right. No sense rushing him. It’s not like these games are critical.
No, the “new” guy is Christian Bethancourt. He hit .327 in Buford, but I’m not sure how he did behind the dish. I suspect his defense will be at least as important as his offense as the brass evaluates him over the final 38 games. It’ll be interesting to see how much he plays. I’d play him a lot. If he performs, then I would not sign a catcher this offseason. If he flops again, then I might go catcher shopping. Could be Hart and Coppy will sign a backstop regardless. Or it could be that they won’t sign one, regardless. But if CB does well it would make it easier to focus on signing either an outfielder or a starting pitcher.
Of course, I have no clue what they’ll do this offseason.
Tonight’s lineup: Markakis, Maybin, Freddie, Gomes, Bethancourt, Peterson, Garcia, Ciriaco SS, Julio T. Andrelton has a minor knee problem. Gomes needs about 115 plate appearances for next year’s option to kick in. Seems unlikely with just 38 games to play. It’d be lunacy to allow him to get that many.
