Good news — J-Up won’t be a Padre

Why is the loss of another suitor for Justin Upton good news? Because the Padres were not a good match, particularly since they were refusing to trade Andrew Cashner or Tyson Ross. Their farm system is heavy on pitchers, none of whom projects as elite. Austin Hedges, an exceptional receiver who makes Christian Bethancourt look like Mike Piazza (.589 OPS in Double-A last season) with the bat, is San Diego’s best non-pitching prospect. I’m impressed they were able to acquire Wil Myers.

It’s still imperative that the Braves trade J-Up. They won’t win with him, and getting nothing but a sandwich pick in return would qualify as a missed opportunity, one a franchise with so little organizational depth can’t afford.
