Clueless Braves promotions department strikes again

It’s a special alumni weekend at The Ted, featuring a pre-game ceremony honoring Bobby, Glavine and Maddux.

The Braves ask that fans be in their seats at 7 p.m. Friday for the pregame ceremony.

Friday!?! It’s hard enough to get to the game on time on a Friday, when Atlanta traffic is at its worst. So expect to see a half-empty stadium, with people filing in after the program starts.

Why not hold it on Saturday, when it’s reasonable to expect fans to arrive 30 minutes early? Then, the Braves’ HOF’ers would receive the attention they deserve.

I trust a tribute to The Professor is also in the works. Pete Van Wieren was the de facto MC for these events since before his retirement and I shudder to think who will stand in his place. Safe to say Pete’s presence will be missed.

I’m glad the Braves honor their past but wish they would go about it smarter, with a little more feeling. Enough with the cookie-cutter ceremony — cue “The Natural” theme, followed by canned Terry McGuirk speech. Fans would much rather hear from the likes of Greg Olson or David Justice than JS and FW.

Wishful thinking.

  1. Right on.
Unrelated, I finally heard Chip Caray utter a line a liked in the San Diego series: “So, the Braves cash in the Francouer error.”

  2. The way they’re playing, the stadium might be half empty in the middle of the game.

  3. Does the corporate droning of Terry McGuirk over the blaring horns of “The Natural” theme get anyone else “excited?”

  4. Honestly, I’m not even sure they need to have yet another salute to Bobby, Maddux and Glavine. Obviously there’s no topping the ceremony in Cooperstown. All three guys have been feted here numerous times. What’s really left to say, by anybody?
