Julio is an astounding 8-0 with a sub-1 ERA in starts after he loses a game.

Chance are he’ll need to hurl well tonight. For the opposing moundsman, Cole Hamels, has been suffocating of late. He’s allowed an earned run in his past 23 innings. Not bad. The good news is the Phillies are just 3-7 in his starts. And they’re 5-9 in June. More good news is the Braves are coming off two of their best back-to-bad offensive games of the season.

Changing subjects, the late, great Tony Gwynn never struck out against Greg Maddux, in 107 plate appearances. And he hit .415 against the greatest pitcher of the generation. In 287 PAs against Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz combined, Gwynn fanned 3 times.

RIP, Tony. The guy had the greatest knack for putting the meat of the bat on the ball of any player I’ve ever seen.

  1. Since the lineup he uses every day doesn’t produce any runs, it would behoove Fredi to try something different.
I am fed up with wondering what HITTING looks like. Even Andrelton had a lousy at-bat with the bases loaded in the 7th, though he ameliorated things some in the 9th.
14 more strikeouts for this bullshit offense. One lousy at bat after another. As you posited the other day, the hitting coach should be fired. We look worse than last year. Every pitcher in both leagues looks like Koufax when they face the Braves.

  2. Darryl Hall made an excellent solo record in the late 70s called “Sacred Songs”.

  3. Excuse me, but it seems like it was just the other day when we tied the game in the bottom of the 9th only to see Hale give up 5 in the top of the 13th.

  4. What would it look like to “remake” the lineup, as Buster Olney has called for? What options are really available at this point?
