The best of the best

July 22, 1997, Braves vs. Cubs

Mad Dog won 12 against his first team — none more impressive than this 76-pitch gem, completed in 2:07. Mark Grace’s double was the only extra base hit allowed.

July 2, 1997, Braves at Yankees

Maddux’s previous start against the Yankees was a loss in Game 6 of the ’96 World Series. He didn’t pitch badly, allowing eight hits and three runs in 7-2/3 IP, but no doubt it left a bad taste in his mouth. Facing a better Yankees line-up, Mad Dog exacted his revenge, allowing but three singles in a complete game shutout. Of his 84 pitches thrown, 61 were strikes. Time of game: 2:09.
