Dispelling the myth that expanded playoffs create more excitment
If I was the commish, baseball would have two leagues, four divisions and 6 playoff teams. The team with the best record in each league would get a first-round bye — the regular season would really mean something then. The other division winner would play a wild card in a best-of-3 first round series, with the winner advancing to the LCS.
Pirates 85-62 3.5 GB
Reds 83-64 5.5
Cardinals 85-61 1 GB
Under my plan, we’d still enjoying two exciting division races. Presently, the East and the West are settled. Now, finishing with the best record means home-field advantage. Wouldn’t it better if it meant a first-round bye?
Only one team currently in the hunt — the Nats — would be out of it if I had my way. But the stakes would be a lot higher, and the baseball more enjoyable. If you’re going to play 162 games, make them count.
