Open thread, 8/29, Braves vs. Miguel Dilones

The Braves go for the sweep, which is mostly a good thing but not entirely. Because the Braves have the best record in baseball they’re unlikely to acquire the extra bat or starting pitcher they appear to need, as every other team in baseball gets a chance to claim players off waivers before FW can.

Not that I’m suggesting the Braves go into the tank (though Fredi needs ┬áto give Avilan more rest; Luis has appeared in one less game than EOF did all of last season). Seeing Jordan rediscover his first-half form has been most encouraging.

And don’t fret over the absence of Freddie in tonight’s line-up — just a night off, sez DOB.

Indians fans have to be frustrated. They played well in Atlanta. Errorless defense, and their pitching was superb. But they leave with nothing.

I would give Varvaro and Ayala all the innings they can handle down the stretch. We don’t need any single game badly enough to wear out this bullpen. Fredi has done a good job this season. No reason in the world to fuck it up now.

  2. I’m with you on the bullpen, Jack. I get using Kimbrel 3 days in a row right now. We need all these wins to get closer to clinching, and his recent outings have not been particularly stressful. But I’m not sure I’d use him three days in a row again. What does it matter if we clinch a day or two earlier if your main asset is spent by the time you reach the playoffs? I’m guessing they might also bring up a couple of relievers on Sept. 1. Not sure who that would be, but there’s got to be somebody. Is Gearrin still at Gwinnett?

Pretty sure he’s on their DL.

  4. Actually, teams within the same league as the team waiving the player have priority over teams in the other league, so a waiver claim by the Braves for an N.L. player would only have to make it past 13 teams, not 28 (which would be the case were the Braves trying acquire somebody from the A.L.).
