Open Thread, 8/20 Braves vs. the Rickeys

As much fun as it is to whup the Nats’ ass, I must say it’s a relief to move on from the beaning drama.

It’s also good to hear that Maholm is returning, and Fredi/Roger will use him to rest the other starters. That will be especially helpful for Minor and Julio T., presumably. Beachy goes tonight, and he’s gotten better each time out (more or less).

In other news, it’s safe to say we have a platoon in center field. Tonight’s Bravos’ starting nine: Heyward, J. Upton, Freeman, McCann, Johnson, Schafer, Simmons, Janish, Beachy.

  1. I have a bad feeling Fredi is going to overwork the ‘pen.

I have a bad feeling Fredi is going to put Ayala in the game in a key spot in October and he’s going to McMichael-Dunn all over our championship hopes.

How the bullpen is used has a lot to do with the score over the last three innings. Our offense is struggling again; we have won a lot of games on the backs of the relievers in the late innings.

  4. I think he’s using Ayala a lot right now so he does not overuse Walden, and to see what Ayala can do.

  5. BJ continues to show why he’s no longer starting. LaTroy Hawkins made him look terrible at the plate in BJ’s PH appearance. I almost feel bad for the guy. He needs to go to the minors and work out his problems in a less stressful atmosphere and hopefully find a spark in time for the playoffs.

  6. For some reason the Braves seem to be struggling a little against the Mets this season:

    vs. Washington – 12 wins, 4 losses
    vs. Philly – 8 wins, 4 losses
    vs. Florida – 8 wins, 4 losses
    vs. Mets – 7 wins, 8 losses

Seems like there is always one mediocre team in the division that the Braves always struggle against. For a long time it was Washington, and then they got good. I guess it wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t the Mets, but oh well. Overall, the team is doing pretty damned good this year.
