Open Thread, 8/13, Braves vs. the Mac Scarces

mac_scarceFan’s gone to the DL to get his eyes fixed. Well, the DL is not going to fix his eyes. We hope lasic surgery will do the trick. Surely he’ll come back hitting like Joe Morgan, except right handed, white and a little taller.

We’ll see. Pun intended.

The Braves face Toccoa, Ga. native Ethan Martin. They got to him in Philly a couple weeks back. Tonight Pastornicky will hit 6th in Fan’s spot and Schafer’s hitting behind him. BJ’s 0-for-11 since his four-hit night in the last game at Washington. He had at least one hit in five straight right off the DL, his longest such streak of the season. Maybe that’s the best we’re getting from him this year. Remember that adage that players peak at 27 or 28. He’s 28. So much for that idea, at least in BJ’s case.

Ah, well. It’s not like the Braves can’t win without him. Tonight’s lineup:

Heyward, J. Upton, Freeman, McCann, Johnson, Pastornicky, Schafer, Simmons, Medlen.

  1. Fuggla goes on the DL with astigmatism? That poor guy probably wouldn’t have tried to jump into the Players Lot if he’d announced this yesterday. That’s the most classic Braves injury since Nick Esasky. It certainly screwed McCann up for a long time. I hope he comes back in time for the playoff roster and hits .571 in the post-season, but…

  2. McCann managed to hit over his weight and drive in 90 while battling his eye problems.
If Uggla’s eyesight is to blame, then how did he hit 21 homers? And does that explain the really awful throwing errors he has made a couple times in the last couple weeks?
Like a lot of other players, Uggla may be using the DL as a place to hide.

  3. Seems Medlen is becoming a six-inning pitcher. He’s losing it quickly and just got lucky on the line drive double play.

  4. Didn’t realize Martin was from Stephens Co. That’s pretty cool. Glad we beat him, though.

  5. Rob, have you already forgotten Mike Hampton? Seemed like every other week he was going on the DL with some strange, new injury.
