Open Thread, 8/9, Braves vs. the Ray Stevenses
It’s all about Beachy and the streak tonight. (Don’t look, Ethel! And, no, Ray Stevens is not from Miami, so I’m breaking with Office tradition with this headline. Forgive me, won’t you? In fact, this singing dumb ass is from some place called Clarkdale, Ga. Turns out it’s an old mill village in Cobb County. Maybe a fan from there will catch a foul ball tonight, eh Skip? RIP, old friend. Maybe Chip should resurrect that tradition. On second thought, that’s probably a bad idea.)
I confess. I thought that song, The Streak, was really funny, but then I was about 10 or 11 years old when it was popular.
Back to the Bravos. Beachy was solid his last time out. If he looks good tonight, and keeps improving we could feel pretty good about a postseason rotation of, presumably, Minor, Teheran, Medlen and Beachy. Here’s a nugget to reinforce that good feeling: Braves pitchers lead the majors in strikeouts since the all star break. It’s become pretty much conventional wisdom that strikeout pitching wins in October.
Our brave knights will face Jacob Turner, a young guy with good numbers this season. He throws a fastball, curve and slider with a rare changeup, according to Fan Graphs. His fastball averages about 92, so he’s quick but not Nolan Ryan.
It’d be nice to see a big crowd to welcome home the Bravos tonight. I think we’ll have a good turnout, what with the home team making like a rolling ball of butcher knives. CB and I will be at the yard tonight, in row 1, section 419 if anyone’s in the neighborhood.
The lineup: Heyward, J. Upton, Freeman, McCann, Johnson, Uggla, BJ, Simmons, Beachy.
P.S. I heard Chipper on the radio this afternoon doing a regular Friday gig on a local station. What a fucking awesome dude he is. As an ex-player, he is so far crafting a career sort of like Jimmy Carter as ex-president. Chip was talking about the Harper thing and the Braves in general, and the guy just flat out knows and, better yet, cares about baseball and the Braves. Thanks for staying interested, Chipper. You rule!
