Open thread, 8/3, Win one for Skip!

We lost Skip Caray five years ago today, and The Nation of Jake has compiled an hour-long tribute that’s worth a listen. It’s a crime Skip, and Pete, aren’t in the Hall of Fame (but Milo Hamilton is). Maybe that’ll change next year, when the Class of 2014 should include Mad Dog, Glavine and Bobby.

Fredi inexplicably gives the red-hot Jay Hey a day off and moves Andrelton back to the lead-off spot. But all eyes will be on Beachy, who I suspect will rebound nicely. Regardless, I’d feel better about October if FW acquired another starter — particularly if Milwaukee makes Kyle Lohse available. The 34-year-old righty has quietly put together another quality season, and his ERA is just a shade over 2.00 in his last 12 starts.

Lohse is signed for two more years at $11 million per — not a bargain but reasonable in today’s market. Acquiring him would probably mean cutting ties with Huddy, who will be 39 next July, but sentiment shouldn’t get in the way of winning a pennant.

Here’s the line-up facing John Lannan, 9-5 with a 3.20 ERA in his career vs. the Braves:

Simmons 6, JUpton 9, Freeman 3, Gattis 2, CJohnson 5, Uggla 4, BUpton 8, Terdoslavich 7, Beachy 1

Gerald Laird was placed on the 15-day DL to make room for B.J. on the roster. Nothing too serious — he had a kidney stone removed surgically.

  1. Just one inning, but Beachy looks sharper already. He gave up a run but no hard-hit balls. Rollins’ single was a hump-back liner, and he only reached third because of Gattis’ throwing error. I think BB will pitch a good game today.

  2. You may have spoken too soon.

  3. You are correct, sir. I really thought his pitches looked crisper in the first inning. He hung one to Mayberry, no doubt.

  4. Hello, Justin.

Start Heyward in CF and have him hit lead off tomorrow, and maybe sweep the series.

Heyward’s career line against Lannan isn’t good, hence Fredi’s brainstorm.

I thought BB looked pretty solid today. A clear improvement over his debut and in line with normal TJ recovery. He won’t really be Brandon Beachy until next April, but he can still be an important contributor down the stretch.

  7. Beachy’s slider needs a lot of work, but he did a solid job yesterday. Deserved a win in my opinion.
