Voices of the Braves screwed again by HOF

Guess who’s not among the 10 finalists for the Hall of Fame’s Ford C. Frick Broadcasting Award, previously given to blowhards Milo Hamilton and Tim McCarver?

How Skip, Pete and Ernie — beloved locally and nationally — continue to be overlooked is baffling. Meanwhile, DeWayne Staats, employed by three teams before he became “the voice of the Rays,” made this year’s cut.

I’m beginning to think MLB takes pleasure in slighting the Braves.

  1. Also, Tom King, voice of the A’s is a finalist. The A’s?!?!?!? Disgusting. Is it just us?

  2. That nerve grating imbecile Shannon is there, too. I was tempted to blame this all on online voting but the candidates who came from there are all good ones. Somehow a research committee chose the bland Staats and the vile Shannon.

I hate to disagee with VRL but the late Bill King is an excellent choice. He’s better known as the voice of the Raiders but he called A’s games for years upon years and is beloved in northern California. He and fellow fan vote finalist Tom Cheek are the two examples other than our guys who I always advocate for. Hopefully, one of them will win it this year and maybe pave the way for one or more of our crew.

  3. Who cares about the HOF? Skip, Pete, and Ernie don’t need that lame institution to confirm how great they were. On any given summer night, think about how many people think of them. That dwarfs anything the Hall could bestow.

  4. Well said, Roadrunner. Ideally they’d be inducted the same year as Mad Dog, Glavine and Bobby. Instead they’ll probably give the Frick Award to Rathbun and Wimpy.

  5. I heard Chris Berman calling the Reds-Giants game on ESPN radio last night. How awful. Could not have been worse. He’ll probably win the Frick award someday, too.

  6. Actually, I went to school with a guy named Tom King. I’ll admit I have no idea who Bill King was. I just get so pissed off about these snubs. Next thing you know, Maddux and Glavine will be passed over on their first ballot for Bonds and Clemens.
