RE-UPDATE: As of 5:20…Fredi tells DOB: “We’re in a holding pattern” re Dempster. Let’s hope the Braves aren’t having to sweeten the deal.

UPDATE: As of 4:25, Bowman and others are tweeting that they are trying to figure out what is happening with Dempster. Sounds like it might not be a done deal, after all.

On we go after a bittersweet weekend in the nation’s capital. First off, the Braves have acquired Ryan Dempster, per Bowman:

Mark Bowman@mlbbowman

Confirmed Ryan Dempster is coming to the Braves. Still trying to confirm details but Delgado could be on the other end of the deal

If it’s straight up for Delgado, that’s a deal that helps this year, but might be better for the little bears down the road. I just hope the Braves don’t give the 35-year-old Dempster a big extension.

Wren had to make a move. Stand pat and the Braves have almost no chance of making it to October this season. We here at the Office are big Delgado fans, so if he’s headed north, that’s unfortunate. On the other hand, that’s not a Texeira-type haul, so I — CD here — can live with it. It clearly helps the 2012 Braves.

So on to Miami. The thing about baseball is there’s never a time for a letdown. The Fish have lost five straight and are all but done. So kick em when they’re down.

  1. I like the trade. JJ and Minor have been awful. This gives us a sept and october rotation of Dempster, Sheets, Hanson, Huddy. I like it.

  2. Yeah, sad if Delgado is sent the other way. However, we still have Huddy, Hanson, Minor, Sheets, and Beachy comes back next year. Assuming Minor progresses, and Hanson meets his potential (I have more faith in the Minor prediction), and the Sheets gamble continues to pay off, I wouldn’t say this would hurt us in the long run. Especially with Teheran and Vizcaino in the wings.

  3. I like Dempster a lot. Always have. I think Delgado will be a good middle of the rotation pitcher for a while. I like him and I wish he could’ve stayed. That said, I like Teheran and Vizcaino better as righties, and I’m not sure than Minor and Gilmartin might not be just as good down the line. I honestly think Minor is only lacking confidence to becoming an excellent pitcher – he just doesn’t have the out pitch right now and he needs to develop the slider or change to the point where he’s comfortable throwing it in any count.

  4. Wren had to do something and Dempster is a nice pickup. Delgado certainly has promise but the Braves have other prospects down on the farm who can match his potential.

J.J. is now a candidate for another trip to Gwinnett or to be DFAed.

  5. Of all our prospects, Delgado seems to me to be the one most likely to fulfill expectations. I’d rather lose Minor in this deal. Oh well. We had to get someone and it wasn’t going to be free.

All the reports have been saying that the Braves weren’t that interested in Dempster and preferred others. That was classic Wren.

  6. I don’t have the “win now” mindset. I will be a Braves fan next year, no matter what our record this year.
I have nothing against Dempster, but he is a .500 pitcher who had a nice 5 week run.

Delgado has a live arm and an idea what he is doing out there, even if he can’t always execute.
The real reason we need Dempster is not Delgado’s lack of consistency, but Tommy Hanson’s. Trade him instead.

  7. @Jackstraw- i thought the exact same. Why not trade Hanson? He’s got three more years left, he’s good and can eat innings. If he starts to trail off- he’ll be a floating fish like JJ is now. Hudson, sheets, dempster, minor, delgado. Mark it 8

  8. Interesting, Braves refused to include Delgado for a year and half of Michael Bourn, but now willing to include him for Dempster rental for less than half a year

  9. Every call like that erodes what little credibility that MLB umpires have left.

I agree with Jack about Delgado. I won’t be upset at all if this deal has fallen through.
