From Keith Law’s weekly ESPN chat:

Cody (Atlanta, GA)

Do you still see Jason Heyward as a future All-Star? How impressed have you been with Simmons?

(1:15 PM) Yes, I do. Not at all.

  1. I know chats don’t lend themselves to in depth discussion but even with that stipulated, that’s pretty brusque.

This smacks of the JJ situation. He undervalued Simmons before and I think he’s going to stick with that until AS falters a little then claim that he knew it all along.

    Disappointing, at least to me.

  2. KLaw went on to say later in the chat that Simmons, based on tools alone, is the best SS in the league. Go figure.

  3. I respect KLaw for who he is and what he does, but he isnt some baseball prodigy. . He doesnt even play ball! What a joke!

  4. The report he wrote on AS earlier was full of praise about his defensive skills but said he had zero power. I don’t think Andrelton is going to be a Blauser type with the power stroke but I think he’s strong enough (and has a quick enough bat) that he’s going to pop a few here and there. Sort of like Yunel, another slasher with a quick, level swing.

  5. Simmons is big, 6’2″. And his throwing arm indicates strength. As he matures and fills out, he will show a little power at the plate. Furcal has enough power to keep defenders honest; no reason why Simmons won’t as well.

  6. The idea that every SS needs to be a slugger is absurd. I like what I see so far.
