Open thread, 6/19, Braves vs. Lee Guttermans

After 67 games in 2008 the Braves were 32-35. Today they’re 35-32 and it’s anyone’s guess whether they’ll end up sucking wind like the Braves of four seasons ago (who finished 72-90) or whether they’ll overcome adversity like the 2010 squad.

They could go either way, but at this point I’m pretty pessimistic.  When an already-wobbly rotation loses its ace, you tend to panic. Naturally, Braves hitters have chosen the worst time possible to go cold.

We may be looking at a sub-.500 team this time next week, though a win tonight would likely prevent that from happening. At least for another week.

Like Fredi says, you never know, you know?

  1. I dont get how many of the Braves “reporters” around this city seem to neglect that fact that when this team slumps they ALL slump. How much does that happen around the league. Its always a team wide issue with us which in my mind points to piss poor leadership. No he’s not responsible for hitting or pitching, but sometimes your just not a good general, and Fredi is NOT a good general. He has no ability to rally the troops. He’s like the annoying voice in the navigation…he will tell you where to go, but dammit if there is construction or traffic, your fucked.

  2. J-Hey needs a swift kick in the ass. That baserunning blunder could very well cost this game.

  3. Yes, but J-Hey’s error at least was due to overzealousness. Plus, he hit Texiera in the foot with a hard line drive. That earns him an attaboy!

  4. Glad I wasn’t the only one laughing at Teixeira hobbling around.

Heyward more than made up for that out but I have to point out that I’m pretty sure Snitker waved him to third. I don’t know what else he could realistically have done. He didn’t lollygag, he came as hard as he could. If he’d run through a stop sign it would’ve been one thing but I don’t think that’s what happened.

  5. No way Snitker waved him. It’s a hard and fast rule: don’t make the last out at third, especially with a 40-year-old teammate trying to score. Big mistake, plan and simple. That said, he made up for it big time with the great throw and a big hit. Great win in what could have been another extremely frustrating loss.

  6. Pepe, maybe Snitker did wave Heyward to third on that play. I don’t see it addressed in game stories on ajc.com or the Braves site. If Snitker waved him, that’s a dumb coaching move. Either way, J-Hey played a splendid game overall.

  7. Seems like guys used to pull up and allow themselves to get caught in a rundown long enough to let the run score. Didn’t they?

  8. Methinks you’re right as usual, Big Cat. Thanks for the wisdom, humor and, above all, the humanity.
