Cold bats and Bobby Cox brainfarts cost us at least two or three more.

  2. Seems the AJC likes to publish this story every year just to remind us of the titles we’ve not achieved.

I was in Toronto last week and went to the basketball game where the Hawks had their way with the Raptors. The turnout was good, and the reason being, after talking to some local fans, was that they considered the Hawks a quality team, one that they would want to see anytime they came to town.

Then, one guy asked me how hard it was to get tickets to a Braves game, being that they were so good for so long. He seemed shocked that pretty much any game you can walk up and by tickets the day of. It was nice to finally hear sports fans from another city giving props to Atlanta; normally, we just get bashed by other city’s fans. Granted I was in Canada, but I’ll still take it.

But it did get me thinking that we do have the luxury of having “good” sports teams over the past 10 years. All of our remaining franchises have made the playoffs recently, but no success, in terms of a championship.

Ultimately, it seems like a good metaphor for the city of Atlanta itself – consistently good, but never great. I’m sure one day we’ll have another championship for one of our sports (just like we’ll one day have the Beltline), I just hope I’m alive and able to celebrate it.

I don’t know what sucks more – that we have not won more championships or Madonna’s halftime performance.
