A Hawk soars in the NBA Finals

Yes, that was an ex-Hawk sinking the three-pointer that won Game 5 for Dallas — probably the closest Atlanta will ever get to the finals. Baseball desperately needs a World Series as compelling as this championship has been. Last one I recall happened 20 years ago.

Speaking of the NBA, I think we can agree that not only is Scottie Pippen the ugliest player ever, he’s also one of the stupidest.

“Michael Jordan is probably the greatest scorer to ever play the game. I may go so far as saying LeBron James may be the greatest player to ever play the game.”

James has 11 points in the fourth quarter this entire series.

As Mike Wilbon says from time to time, without Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen would’ve been the world’s tallest Domino’s deliveryman. I loathe both of them to the bone but Pippen is a joke.

  2. I’m not a Jordan fan, either. And Magic Johnson is the best player ever.

This game was tape-delayed; most CBS affiliates chose to air reruns of Incredible Hulk, Dukes of Hazzard and Dallas instead.

Delayed here, too. The weekend afternoon CBS games were pre-empted by Tarzan movies. Somehow they never ran out.

I have a mixed set of feelings about Johnson (I think Oscar Robertson is the best player in the game’s history, myself) but Magic and Larry Bird (who I detest but respect greatly) put the game on a national footing.

My two cents is that Bill Russell is the greatest ever. Lebron has the talent to be the most dominant player ever, but when an athlete makes as much money as he does, earning it becomes secondary to spending it.

Haven’t watched much of the NBA Finals. Re a more important matter, is Fredi starting to consider splitting the closing duties? Venters and Kimbrel had both pitched two straight days, and Fredi chose to use JV last night. It worked. Venters is more efficient than Kimbrel — a .724 WHIP vs. Kimbrel’s 1.29. Kimbrel seems to have lapses like Wednesday night when he disposes of the first two hitters like a couple of little leaguers, and then gives up a walk, a double and the game-tying single. Maybe the ump missed strike 3 that would’ve ended the game, but that happens. Still no word on this from the local organ.

  6. This NBA series has been very entertaining. Actually the entire playoffs have been full of drama. And, of course, the NBA will take advantage of the high playoff ratings by locking out their players…

Jack, I agree with you. No other player has had as big an impact on his team’s success than Russell.

CB, if you believe Pippen is the ugliest player ever, it’s obvious that you’ve never seen a photo of Popeye Jones. Do a Google image search. Be prepared for the hideousness…

  7. I stand corrected (re: Pippen). Steve Hawes was no looker, either.

    Henry Finkel.

    Or Greg Kite.

    Or Kevin Kunnert.
