More bad news for the Phils

Their already fragile bullpen will start the season without closer Brad Lidge, who’s headed to the 15-day DL with shoulder pain.

Lidge says he’ll get an MRI when he gets back to Philadelphia and doesn’t know when he will return. Lidge was shaken up after allowing two hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning against the Twins’ minor leaguers. “I’m a little concerned because I haven’t had shoulder problems in the past,” Lidge said.

And Hamels has been getting hit really, really hard the last couple weeks.

I’ve never thought Cole Hamels was anything special. He had that big October in ’07 and he’s been living off of that since.

    Die Phillies, die!

Hamels is a pretty good pitcher, Pepe. Strikeout-to-walk ratio of about 3:1. Averages less than a hit per inning. If he went down they would miss him a lot. Lidge, however, may be irreplaceable.

  5. Lidge was good last year, terrible the year before, and when he’s not getting it done, the Phillies bullpen is pretty shaky. A great starting rotation along with a mediocre everyday lineup and a lousy bullpen isn’t the lead-pipe sure thing folks assumed it was when the Phils signed Cliff Lee.

They went months last year without scoring runs with Werth and Utley IN the lineup. I think they’re about like Saddam’s Republican Guard in 1990. All hat, no cattle. Soon to be strafed by Heyward and Freeman and McCann rockets to be left smoldering in the desert.
