RIP Chuck Tanner

The former Atlanta manager died Friday at his home in Pennsylvania. Braves fans may not remember him fondly but by all accounts he was a decent guy and, in the right situation, a competent manager.

  1. If it weren’t for Chuck Tanner, Willie Stargell would never have been a coach in Atlanta and I would not be able to claim Pops as a Brave. Godspeed Chuck, at least one Braves fan remembers you fondly.

Don’t forget he was a player in Milwaukee, as well.

He seemed to have a good relationship with Dale and was a vast improvement over the worthless Haas. I know that’s faint praise but it was important to me at the time.

  3. I remember Chuck talking about a parade down Peachtree when he was hired in 1986. He was off by 9 years (or 5 if you count the parade after the ’91 WS). In an interview a couple of years ago, Chuck was trying to take credit for the Braves’ renaissance. If I remember correctly, Bobby fired Chuck in 1988 because he wanted to play the veterans over the young players (12-27 record didn’t help either) and also overworked Glavine and Pete Smith just before he was fired on May 22, 1988. Despite this, he did manage a great series in 1979 and seemed to be a good guy. R.I.P.

I think the end came when he had Zane Smith throw a ridiculous amount of pitches in a game, and Bobby visited him in his hotel room to give him his pink slip. It sounds like it was pretty ugly. Stargell showed up and Tanner urged him to quit rather than continue working under Bobby.

  5. He did good work with the Pirates and, before that, with a hapless White Sox club. He was a Baseball Man, and that’s a good thing.

  6. Take away his Braves stay and his career was quite accomplished. Every dude on that 79 Pirates team sweared by Chuck Tanner, even coke happy, hard partying, bad attituded Dave Parker. That says something. Even Charlie Finley spoke well of Tanner.

    RIP

He didn’t have much to work with here.
