Good movie, bad timing

Hilarious nugget from the AP story of today’s game:

Manager Charlie Manuel was livid at his team, saying the players have shown no sense of urgency to end their slide. He showed his displeasure before the game when he spotted several of them gathered around a television, watching the movie “Gran Torino.” He ordered the clubbies to shut it off.

That’s a bad sign if you’re a Phillies fan. A tense clubhouse is a losing clubhouse.

“I know what you’re thinking…has it been ten days since we won a game or only nine? Well, in all the excitement here, I kinda lost track myself. But since you just got swept by the Braves and are two and a half games out of first, with the scraping sound of your window of opportunity closing ringing in your ears, you’ve gotta ask yourself…do I feel lucky?”

  3. First of all, the only manager that reminds me of Walt Kowalski half as much as Bobby is Manuel.

Second, Gran Torino isn’t much of a pick-me-upper.

Well, maybe they followed it up with a couple of Bergman movies to lighten the atmosphere.
