The 2010 ‘pen
11/03/2009 at 1:29 pm | In Bullpen, free agents, trades | 8 CommentsBowman doesn’t expect the Braves to re-sign Sori or Gonzo. He lists Billy Wagner and Douglasville native Matt Capps as possible replacements. I don’t like Capps as a closer, but would be fine with him working the middle innings along with Moylan, Medlen and O’Flaherty.

The only reliever we have ever spent big money on was Smoltz. For a team with a limited budget/priorities it’s wise to play it that way. Wagner types is probably what we’ll get.

I’ve long thought Billy would fit here. Don’t underestimate his desire to come back to the south.

Why do I think of Dan Kolb whenever I hear the name Matt Capps?
When did the Pirates become our AAA affiliate?

We are the Yankees to their Kansas City Athletics.

Capps is a bum but he’s not quite that big a bum. More Bob Wickman than Dan Kolb.

Honestly, acquiring Capps and signing Wagner makes a lot of sense. How much would Wagner really command? Provided it’s not an extensive amount and incentive-laden, we could potentially be looking at a bargain arm at the back end of the bullpen. And Capps – the Gainesville native – would be a nice set-up guy/closer depending upon how they choose to use him. With a couple arbitration years left, it would make some sense.

Wagner is a Type A and the Sox will probably offer him arb, which is bad becaue it’ll cost us a 1st round pick, but that should also kill his price. AMybe 5-6 for one year? I think he’d be great. Capss in a setup role would be solid.

Wagner is pretty old but I’ve always liked him. What about Smoltz? He struck out 73 in 78 innings this year so his arm appears to be sound. At his age, insisting on a starting gig may not pan out. Would he do it? Would the Braves?
