Is Jason Bay worth Derek Lowe?
11/02/2009 at 12:02 pm | In free agents | 18 CommentsDamn straight, and apparently he’ll cost no more (4 years, $60 mil) than Lowe did a year ago. Bay turned 31 in September, bats from the right and is a virtual cinch to hit 30 homers and drive in 100 runs every year. Just what the Bravos need. It’ll require some luck — that is, a team that would take Lowe’s contract in a salary dump. That should be FW’s first priority.

I’m guessing his price goes higher than that.

Depends on whether the market holds to last year’s pattern. I doubt the Yanks will make a big pitch for him, and if Boston is going after Holliday or Adrian Gonzalez instead then you’d have to assume the Mets and Giants would be the leading suitors. I might go a little higher than that salary-wise, but four years is plenty. Guess he isn’t as “working class” as Holliday.

That same piece says the Yankees might go after him. They’ll probably let Damon and Matsui walk, so they might need an outfielder.

They’ll probably sign Lackey and Holliday too.

And Figgins.

Wouldn’t be surprised if they inked Gonzo, too. Their bridge to Rivera is shaky.

If they let Damon walk that might be an interesting option for a year or two. He gets on base, and can hit the long ball as well, and even steal a base from time to time.
I’d like Bay though; he’d erase the bad memories of Canadians past on the Braves’ roster.

I prefer Bay to Holliday, by a long shot. Smarter and more solid.

My guess is that Holliday will go out and get the big money contract, and Bay will wait until that bidding war is over before he gets serious. At 4/60 he’s a good deal, but my guess is that it will be a lot higher. Hopefully Holliday winds up with the Yanks and the Red Sox trade for Gonzalez so the market will be depressed.
Either way, the Braves almost always get what they need via trade.

Pure speculation here, but my guess is the Braves end up trading Lowe for a Swisher-type to play first or one of the OF corners then sign Jermaine Dye. I don’t see Rochey settling for a two-year deal, and I’d be reluctant to give him more than that.

I know we’ll never recoup what we lost when we gave him away but I would love to see JD back in a Braves uniform.

I certainly wouldn’t object to us making a play for Jermaine Dye. Despite the fact he was absolutely horrendous the entire second half, I think he would clearly help the club. If we were able to trade Lowe, re-sign LaRoche and add a formidable bat with Dye, I’d be all for it. I just really think we’re going to run into a lot of hurdles in trying to deal Lowe without picking up a large chunk of the contract… there is absolutely no conceivably way the Braves would get into any Milton Bradley discussions, is there?

I’ve thought that- Lowe for Bradley, but only if it’s straight up. Worse case scenario we dump Milton when he pulls something and save 25 mill.
You gotta think Milton cn only go up- despite an awful year he still had an OBP of .378.

No offense intended, but I’d rather have Milton Bradley than J.D. Drew, though I want no part of “aka Parker Brothers.” And if forced to choose, I’d take Pepe Frias or Chopper Campbell over Ol’ J.D. I’d consider J.D. for Obie and Craig Skok, though.

I think Pepe’s JD is Jermaine Dye.

I think you’re right. Sorry about that, Pepe. I was wondering why anyone in their right mind would campaign for ‘Ol J.D.’s return on the office. Perhaps a new installment of J.D.’s Diary is warranted.

How about we trade for Dave Parker. He kicks ass for the Pirates.

I was talking bout Jermaine but I would also love to see a new installemnt of J.D.’s diary. Duane checking in has whet my appetite.
