Another trendy traitor

Keep running 'til you get to Boston, traitor!

Keep running 'til you get to Boston, traitor!

Jeff Francoeur is now officially my least-favorite Atlanta Brave — not so much for his ineptitude at the plate, but this:

One thing that makes sense about Boston scouting the struggling Francoeur is that he’s a big Red Sox fan (he used to carry a Red Sox Mastercard until his Braves teammates made him get rid of it).

The Lilburn Flash in the Pan was born and raised in the Atlanta ‘burbs. The Braves started their incredible streak of division titles when he was 7. And yet he’s a Red Sox fan.

I’m glad his fellow Braves made him get rid of that ridiculous Sox Mastercard. Now it’s time to get rid of him.

As I wrote earlier this month in the local organ, there’s no excuse for Atlantans rooting for out-of-town teams. That goes double for Frenchy.

To quote Ralph from Ben Hill, “Get out of town, sucka!”

  1. Heh. I used to work some with Ralph in his heyday. He would’ve had nothing to do with Frenchy.

  2. I remember hearing that when he was a rookie. Weren’t his parents from Boston?

  3. When I was growing up in Northeast Oklahoma, the nearest major-league team was the Kansas City Athletics, whom nobody liked, and they were still a four-hour drive away. Not counting the pathetic A’s, the nearest team was the Cardinals (this was a decade before the Rangers moved from D.C.), and they were a seven-hour drive away. So I didn’t really have a local team.

Now most of the kids I knew were either Yankees fans, because they were winning and Mickey Mantle was a local guy, or Cardinals fans, because they were the team the local radio station carried and as close to a local team as there was. But even then I considered the Yankees fans to be front-running swine and most of the baseball idiots were among the Cardinals fans. So I decided to be different and just pick a team to root for, and I chose the Braves, and I’ve been a fan ever since, hell almost 50 years.

I don’t have much use for any other N.L. team (OK, I don’t hate the Cardinals and the Astros, but that’s about it), but I’ll generally pick an A.L. team to root for (although never going so far as wearing the gear of), and, after having had a college roommate from Maine, for years that team was the Red Sox. But once they finally won a series and the non-Boston-native Bosox fans began popping up, they quickly became intolerable. Because my opinion of such creeps is the same one I formed back when I was abut 7 years old: They’re front-running swine. Until you’ve been through hard times with your favorite team — and as I suffered through the era of having Frank LaCorte and Blue Moon Odom in the starting rotation (imagine JoJo Reyes every other start), I think I qualify — you’re not a fan at all. So FYF.

  4. Wonder if Frenchy’s a fan of the Pawtucket Red Sox?

  5. His parents and relatives are from Massachusetts. I remember some articles from a couple of seasons ago about how excited he was to play at Fenway in interleague play because a lot of his relatives would be there.

  6. I remember that Red Sox Mastercard being mentioned in a story. I also remember my reaction being, “What a dork”.

  7. His post-trade interviews are going to be doozies.

  8. Pepe’s right. He’s going to savage the Braves. If he gets traded (hopefully) it’s gonna get ugly.

  9. “I’m happy to finally be with a first class organization…” will be a recurrent meme.

  10. I bet Terry Francona will be by far the best manager he’s ever played for. If he ever gets to play for him. Who manages the PawSox these days?
